Landing the job isn’t the end goal—it’s the starting line.
As career services professionals, we know the exhilaration of securing a job offer can quickly turn into anxiety over making the right decision. And while it’s easy for students to get caught up in the title, the salary, or the brand name, our role is to help them think more deeply.
Because here’s the truth: Not every job offer is a good fit. And one of the best tools students have at their disposal? Asking the right questions—especially when they have the chance to speak with current employees during the interview process.
Let’s move beyond “So, how do you like working here?” and equip students with the questions that actually matter.
A shiny title and flashy perks are meaningless if there’s no room to evolve. Encourage students to dig into the company’s approach to development and growth.
If the culture treats mistakes as learning moments, that’s a green flag. If errors lead to blame and isolation, it’s worth pausing. Companies that invest in their people—through coaching, feedback, or development plans—are more likely to support long-term career success.
The best careers are built in places that champion lifelong learning. Whether it’s formal mentorship programs or informal guidance from managers, students need to ask:
Support for learning isn’t just a nice-to-have. It’s a signal that the company values progress and stays future-focused. And in today’s fast-moving world of work, being in a place that nurtures curiosity and skill-building is key.
Trust isn’t built through mission statements—it’s earned through consistent action.
Encourage students to ask employees:
Why does this matter? Because trust in leadership is one of the biggest predictors of employee satisfaction and retention. If students sense that the company's actions don’t match its words, it may be a sign to think twice.
These three questions—Can I grow? Can I learn? Can I trust?—should become every student’s compass when navigating job offers. They go beyond the surface and help students assess alignment with their personal values and professional aspirations.
As career advisors, our job isn’t just to help students land roles—it’s to help them land well. Encourage them to go into interviews curious, bold, and ready to gather the information they need to make informed, empowered decisions.
